Earlier today, Amazon Mexico accidentally listed an entry that grabbed everyone’s attention – a listing for a new Spyro remaster, titled the ‘Reignited Trilogy’. Alongside several game journalists getting purple eggs in the mail, all linked to the unverified Spyro Twitter account which the official Crash Bandicoot Twitter account recently followed,  and the variety of other rumours that have been flying around over the past couple of months, this slip-up got people talking again – and me thinking.

In fact, I was just about to write up my first article in a while on the rumours flying around about this whole Spyro remaster business when… well… the official announcement got made. Not only that, but an official trailer has also been released, which you can view below. My god, I am hyped.

Toys for Bob, the Activision subsidiary which developed the hit Skylanders franchise and is working on the Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy‘s Nintendo Switch port, is taking charge of the Reignited Trilogy for PS4 and beyond. Toby Schadt’s post on PlayStation’s EU blog states that they will be looking to recreate the original Spyro experience as closely as possible out of respect for both the games and their dedicated fans, including ensuring that aspects such as ‘Spyro’s original movement metrics — speeds and accelerations for walking, running, jumping, charging, gliding, flying, swimming, hovering, and more’ are matched to the originals as closely as possible.

The graphics, as you can see from the trailer, have been beautifully redone, with the main dragon himself looking rather adorable and true to his original image. Toys for Bob have done a great job, it seems, in capturing Spyro’s original spirit and playstyle whilst also recreating the terrains and movements which captivated a generation just under 20 years ago. I’m so grateful that Toys for Bob went with Spyro’s original look rather than anything from A Hero’s Tail or beyond… as I think we’d have all been sick to our stomachs if he looked like this:

Horrified? Yeah, me too.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will launch on September 21st 2018, and will initially be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It appears that a Nintendo Switch entry will also be coming at some point in the future, due to the fact that Nintendo’s UK store accidentally created a listing for the game yesterday, before having it swiftly removed, but it’s unlikely that it will appear for some time yet.

It seems like 2018 really doesn’t want me to have any money left, with this remastered Spyro trilogy, the Nintendo Switch version of Super Smash Bros.Kingdom Hearts III, and possibly a new Pokémon game all coming out this year. So, show of hands, who’s excited for the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy? What are you most looking forward to? Me personally, I want to see the other playable characters in Spyro: Year of the Dragon, as that is my all time favourite Spyro game. Let us know your thoughts, and we will see you later on when more news arises!
