Hold onto your pointy hats, my fellow witches and wizards, because the first trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter mobile game made by Jam City and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s own label, Portkey Games – Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery – has just been released over on Pottermore today.

Slated for release at some point this year, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will give its players the chance to lead their very own life as a witch or wizard studying at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1980s. This means attending classes, making friends, learning spells and exploring both Hogwarts castle and its grounds – and, of course, competing with your enemies and rivals in the other three houses than your own.

While Harry Potter himself won’t be attending Hogwarts with you, you might recognise a few of your other favourite characters from J. K. Rowling’s famous franchise, such as Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley, wandering around the school grounds.

The short animated trailer (above) shows off an owl delivering a Hogwarts letter to the household of a new Hogwarts student (which could be you later this year!), the pairing process of wand and wizard, and the well-known faces of many professors, including Rubeus Hagrid, Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall. Additionally, it demonstrates just some of the minigames, special features and classrooms you might be expected to visit as part of the game.

Both the trailer and the official announcement post on Pottermore make clear that  Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will be a very customisable and personal gameplay experience for all. The initial announcement post reads:

The role-playing experience will invite you to create your own personalised student avatar, and make key decisions that will impact your story. The trailer wisely reminds us of Dumbledore’s words: ‘It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.’

As the game continues, so will your Hogwarts education, your magical skills and relationships with other characters, so make sure to make every decision count. In other words – don’t choose a Crabbe and Goyle-style path, eh?

As a player, it looks like you’ll be free to make your own choices about the direction of your Hogwarts career – but, as the end of the post reads, maybe some decisions are more significant than others to get right…!

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will be playable on both iOS and Android phones, as well as via the Amazon Appstore. Pre-registration is already possible by visiting the game’s official website, and will provide those who do pre-register with ‘news and updates about the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery mobile game up to and beyond the release’.

This would be a wise move to keep up-to-date with the game’s development, and who knows, maybe a surprise beta will be planned for those who have pre-registered at some stage in the future – though that’s all speculation at this point.
